Second Friday - March 12th - 6 to 10 pm

Options Academy-The Arts Music Program Presents “Acoustic Set Night”

The  talented young musicians from “Options Academy-The Arts”  will perform an eclectic blend of great music by Joni Mitchell, Jeff Buckley, The Beatles, Paramore,  Tcarthe Fleet Foxes and more, along with some new original music.  The performance begins at 8 pm in OCAC’s North Parlor.   It is free and open to the public.

“Options Academy-The Arts” is a Butler Tech program located in the Fitton Center in Hamilton, OH.  Students in grades 10-12 from high schools throughout Butler County (and the Northwest Local School District) choose to attend school at OAA and receive career-technical training in the performing and visual arts.  Students are accepted into to the program based on a demonstrated passion for the arts.  The music program at OAA is primarily focused on rock and jazz.  Instruction is offered in techniques for guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals (and occasionally other instruments), as well as theory, music business and recording, and ensemble work in rock bands, jazz combos and vocal groups

Rock, Paper, Scissors – Which will win out?
The fiber art work of Judy Dominic and Mcartoya Jones is on exhibit from March 12th through April 3rd.  An opening reception will be held during OCAC’s Second Friday, from 6 to 8 pm on March 12th.
Dominic and Jones work reflects the ongoing tussle between the materials, the techniques and the creative visions each artist has.
Judy finds expression in using materials and techniques that are unusual and out of the ordinary. Gut and natural basketry materials allow basic structure to control. A modified version of African mudcloth dyeing invites a minimalist color play. Pulped plants and recycled papers permit an expression of thought that goes deeper than words.
Moya lets color and texture take over her creative process. Primitive and modern dyeing techniques compete for time. Images become partners in the color dance. Stitching takes on a meditative quality infusing the work.
What prevails in the daily triple challenge in their studios? Will paper cover rock, will scissors cut paper or will rock break scissors?

Open Studios

OCAC’s resident artists will also open their studios between 6 and 8 pm.  The artists come from a variety of backgrounds, and display an assortment of styles from jewelry making, acrylic and oil painting, to watercolor and drawing.  There are also several musicians who welcome you into their studios at the Arts Center.  The studios are located on OCAC’s third floor and lower level.

Second Friday's Ballroom Dance

FEBUARY, 10th   7 p.m.
Scarred Lands & Wounded Lives: The Envicartronmental Footprint of War

The environment is war's silent casualty. Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives shows how war and preparations for war further compromise the environmental health of a planet already under stress from massive population increases, unsustainable demands on natural resources, and ruinous environmental practices. In the context of today's growing awareness and alarm about global climate change, the film shows that natural security (the protection and preservation of ecosystems) is an essential component of any realistic approach to national security.

Coming Home: E.F. Schumacher & The Reinvention of The Local Economycart
In 1973, British economist E.F. Schumacher wrote Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered"... a book that offered a vision of an economy driven by a desire for harmony, not greed; an economy based on community and ecological values, not global financial derivatives. In the 1970s, Small is Beautiful helped launch a back-to-the-land movement that is the ancestor to the Local Food Revolution of today.
For the last three decades, the E.F. Schumacher Society has transformed Schumacher's ideas into a series of practical innovations reinventing much of the local economy of Great Barrington, Massachusetts and southern Berkshire County in the process.
COMING HOME tells the story of the Society's remarkable work that includes founding of the nation's first CSA, economic development based on Community Land Trusts, and the creation of the nation's most successful local currency ... BerkShares.

Testimonials

"This program was not only enjoyable and entcartertaining, but I was learning and laughing at the same time."

"Ann Anzalone was outstanding. Myexperiences as a parent have touched on so many of the things she talks about but I received the information from half a dozen different professionals over the course of years. It stayed somewhat disjointed in my mind. She ties it all together."

"I loved this program! This is the most practical information I've been given to take directly back to my class.

THE LISA BIALES TRIO IN CONCERT
An OCAC Family Series Event
February 21, 2010
3 pm
No Charge

A soulful songstress, performer, and recording artist, Lisa Biales sings with a crystal pure voice. Her instrument is supple, fcartocused, and strong, allowing pure sounds to soar effortlessly from her heart and soul as she incorporates jazz and blues into her original music.

Joined this afternoon by Doug Hamilton on violin and Michael G. Ronstadt on cello, a Lisa Biales concert is relaxed and intimate regardless of the size of the audience. Presenting her own music, and that of jazz standards, Lisa charms audiences with her delightful stories of inspiration. Her songs take you on a journey of the heart as you see in the mind’s eye each plot developing right before you. The Oxford Press says, “The song Lady In Waiting is like watching a movie on the big screen.”

A songwriter who finds her muse in life, Lisa has five solo albums under her belt, including one for children called Yellow Shoes. John Funnell of 88.9 WYN-FM, Australia says, “Yellow Shoes just proves that children's songs have a lot to offer adults, too.” Lisa has also recorded three albums of folk songs with the renowned duo Prairie Orchid, which she co-founded in 1991 with Sarah Goslee Reed.

Lisa brings a playful innocence and an enchanting presence to the stage, and with a stroke of the guitar she sets up the voice to hit you right in the heart. Lisa performs with Doug Hamilton on Violin, and/or Michael G. Ronstadt on Cello.

This wonderful event is part of the Fine Arts Fund Sampler Weekend!  Join people from all over the Cincinnati region for the Fine Arts Fund Sampler Weekend, sponsored by Macy's, on February 20 - 21. cartDoug Hamilton (violin/guitar/voice) and Michael G. Ronstadt (cello/guitar/voice) present a wonderful fusion of classical repertoire and original song writing.  Both musicians perform in the Lisa Biales Trio throughout Ohio and surrounding states, Michael tours internationally with his group Lost In Holland and Doug currently performs with the Richmond Symphony and the Dayton Philharmonic and is the cofounder of The Wildwater Band.  Since Michael and Doug are usually performing with other artists, take this opportunity to catch their original music!  Find more information at http://www.michaelronstadt.com/ and search on http://www.youtube.com/ for some wonderful live performances.
